"Red Velvet"

During my initial study of insects beyond South Western Pennsylvania a friend recommended that I search for Red Velvet Ants.  His first hand experience with these fascinating but feared insects left a distinct impression on him.  Due to their incredibly painful sting they where known by locals as "Cow Killers".

I strayed slightly from their real world nature as this species is not known to collect in groups.  Their is something to be said for keeping to nature, though the contrasting red against the oak bark which seems to be growing upwards with the flow of the ants made it irresistible to take a little artistic license.
